Someday we’ll rent a cheap little cottage for a week. The curtains will be tacky but there’ll be lots of fluffy blankets & dr pepper in glass bottles. Someday it will be the kind of summer that never ends, where time is just the space between stars & clouds. Someday we’ll bring our glass bottles & a picnic basket & flashlights out to our old 80s BMW & stow it in the trunk. We’ll drive out the beach, the one that no one ever goes to because there are too many rocks & seagulls & thorny plants with pretty flowers. Someday we’ll lie on the roof & talk until our eyelids grow heavy & the sun blazes orange, painting the world with daytime. The night will be full of secrets, whispered out into the darkness & caught by hungry hearts. Someday, I won’t be one of them.
